Finasteride and Propecia are two different medications prescribed for the treatment of male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). Both drugs inhibit the formation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to hair loss.
Propecia is also used to treat men with a rare genetic predisposition (dehydration) and is thought to increase the risk of prostate cancer. Men with a hormone receptor-positive breast or prostate cancer may benefit from taking finasteride.
Both Finasteride and Propecia are considered to be “hormone-free” and have no clinically significant differences between groups. However, Finasteride is considered a more selective 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, which means less time consumed in the daily routine compared to Propecia.
It is important to note that Finasteride is only effective against male pattern baldness. It does not treat prostate cancer or enlarged prostate gland. Finasteride is not recommended for use in individuals with a predisposition to male pattern baldness.
Finasteride and Propecia are both considered to have slightly different side effects. Finasteride has been found to cause more harm than theasteride-related (male pattern baldness). However, there have been no significant differences in general health, sexual function, or menstrual cycles between the two.
Like any medication, Propecia can cause side effects in some individuals. However, the side effects are less likely to occur with Finasteride compared to Proscar. Common side effects of Propecia include hot flashes, decreased volume of body water, and fatigue.
Less common side effects of Propecia include weight gain, swelling of the ankles, and hair loss. These side effects are usually temporary and resolve on their own once the medication is stopped.
Finasteride has also been known to cause more harm than theasteride-related (male pattern baldness). However, a small placebo-controlled study of 1,500 men found no evidence that finasteride was more likely to cause more harm in men taking a daily 5-alpha reductase inhibitor.
A similar study conducted in the United States found that men who used finasteride for at least three years and had a family history of prostate cancer or breast cancer were more likely to have their prostate removed from their body. Finasteride also reduced the risk of developing prostate cancer by 30%.
A study in Japan also found that men with male pattern baldness did not appear to be more likely to develop prostate cancer. However, the researchers cautioned that further large, controlled studies are required to confirm the results of the Japan study and to determine whether finasteride was more effective than testosterone replacement in preventing prostate cancer.
Although Propecia has been shown to cause fewer side effects than Finasteride, there were also some rare and uncommon side effects that have been reported with the drug. These side effects include hot flashes, decreased sex drive, and breast tenderness. Although rare, men with pre-existing health conditions (such as epilepsy or mental illness) and a family history of breast or prostate cancer should not stop taking Propecia.

RefreshFinasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.
Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.
